Natural Rehabilitation of Gravel Pits on the Oak Ridges Moraine -
Dance Environmental Inc., 1998.

This study documents the extent of naturalization and degree of biological diversity that has developed over time in several abandoned and intentionally rehabilitated sand and gravel pits located on the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Some key findings include:

  • Soil differences between abandoned and rehabilitated sites decreases with age;
  • Flat portions of non-rehabilitated sites develop a plant community (forb meadow) which is similar in composition to that of rehabilitated sites; and
  • The presence of ponds or lakes in pits increases the variety of plants and animals present.
